What type of wrestling career is more important?
Do you think it is better to be someone like Triple H or Batista, both of whom bitch and moan about not getting the championship. Eventually, they both end up with unlimited title shots and are popular to the casual fan base.
Or do you think it is better to have a career like a Jamie Noble or Ken Shamrock. You don’t pull any backstage crap and while it might not pan out perfectly for you, you are still really respected by dedicated fans and people inside the business.
I would rather be a respectable wrestler with a very loyal fanbase, the respect of my peers, and critical acclaim. I like the idea of being a cult icon/underdog, plus I get to keep my integrity intact. I consider it a compliment to be called underrated, actually.
Fame has a price. Sure, I get to be 300-time World Champion but then that would mean I have to tone down my moveset a lot and often act exactly the way management would want me to act if for example people think a guy like me should be a face when I’m better off as a heel.
Then again it’s not all in black and white. Guys like The Undertaker and Chris Jericho do not pull any backstage crap and are admired by both fans and peers alike. Also they can wrestle well and get title shots.
