Company History
Mitchell & Ness Sporting Goods opened its doors in Philadelphia in 1904. Frank P. Mitchell, a former tennis champion and AAU wrestling, and Charles M. Ness, an avid Golf was born in Scotland, were all based Mitchell & Ness Sporting Goods in 1904. Their original store created and hung handmade rackets tennis, and using wood imported from Scotland, manufactured custom-made golf clubs. Over time they expanded their business, selling uniforms baseball local football teams. When the Philadelphia Eagles came the young National Football League in 1933, M & N has provided the team jerseys and equipment. Mitchell & Ness will continue to equip the Eagles season 1963.
The first time that Mitchell & Ness tag appeared on the uniform of Major League Baseball for the Philadelphia Athletics in 1938. In the early 1940s, M & N has begun to provide other Philadelphia Team Major League Baseball Phillies. At the end of the decade, Mitchell & Ness tag was found on school and uniforms for college teams in the Philadelphia area.
In late 1970, Mitchell & Ness had left the company team to focus on its retail operation. The store became an outlet for equipment for field hockey and ski gear.
Mitchell & Ness had a brush with bankruptcy in 1983. Its owner, Peter Capolino told the Detroit Free Press, "In 1983, all the expansion that I had was gone to hell. I fired 100 people, closing two warehouses. I reduced the company to a small store on 13th and Walnut Street (in Philadelphia). It is down to just me and my wife. "
In 1985, a customer entered the shop and asked if M & N could repair his game Pirates-1960 jacket scope, and his 1949 St. Louis Browns game-worn shirt. They both made of wool flannel uniforms like all of baseball had been. Mitchell & Ness found he could do, and with the realization that M & N was capable of this task, an idea was born: Reproduce wool historically accurate uniforms baseball flannel.
Mitchell & Ness has recruited the history buffs and sports gurus. They dug in the old newspapers, periodicals, books, programs and excerpts from old films. They consulted vintage uniform collection across the country and visited the archives, Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown.
Major League Baseball teams had stopped wearing flannel wool sweaters in 1972. Teams are now double sweaters Knitted polyester. In a dusty warehouse in North Philadelphia, Mitchell & Ness found rolls of wool baseball old from 50 years early. They were always carefully wrapped, intact and in mint condition ready to be cut and sewn.
Flannel sewn. Lettering and patches have been recreated and applied. The jerseys have been completed, and they were offered for sale. The first shirts sold almost overnight.
