On identification for your dog could easily be compared to insurance – you're glad you have it but you hope that you'll never have to use it!
However, if you do, you'll feel safe knowing it's there. When it comes your dog, especially a puppy, you never know when they might accidentally slip out the back door and have an identity can make the difference between getting your adorable pet back into your arms, or lose it forever!
What is the best type of identification for my dog?
Here below are several types of identification that can be used to help identify your dog if he or she had never lost. To give you a clear idea of each type so you can make an informed decision on how to secure your dog, here's the list:
1. Basic tags and collar: This type of identification is fairly inexpensive and can be handled quickly. You can order metal or plastic tags you have your address and phone number printed on them. The tag will be attached to the dog collar. This form of identification is also easy to spot, and anyone who sees a dog running loose can just look down and check to see what family he belongs.
Unfortunately, these labels can also be easily removed or torn. If your dog or puppy loses this identification then it is very unlikely to get him back. They are thieves out there who will be more than happy to see a dog roaming around himself and remove his collar to bring him home.
2. Microchips: Microchips for dogs and other pets have been around for some time. Initially, each chip that worked in the United States were placed on a signal frequency of 125kHz. Now chips operate with a 134.2 kHz to comply with the systems micro-chip used internationally.
Microchip identification is surgically implanted in your dog beneath the skin and more generally between shoulder blades. The size is no bigger than a grain of rice and small chip that contains information about its owner that is downloaded to a national database. It takes a special scanner to read the number on each chip. These scanners are usually available through veterinary clinics and many animal shelters.
3. Tattoo Identification: The identification tattoo is a third option that can be done fairly easily, and is generally inexpensive. Mostly, these tattoos will enter your phone number and name of the puppy. The ears, or stomach area is usually the location of a tattoo that will be printed. The disadvantages are that tattoos can fade over time and has even changed.
